South Dakota Voices for Children
May 21 luncheon honored Black Hills 2009 Champions for Children

Three Rapid City men ? attorney Al Scovel, Judge Marshall Young and psychiatrist Dr. Stephen Manlove ? were honored as 2009 Champions for Children at luncheon at the Holiday Inn Rushmore Plaza. In addition two individuals from Rapid City and two Northern Hills? organizations named to the 2009 Champion for Children Honor Roll will be recognized.

The awards, given each year by South Dakota Voices for Children, acknowledge exceptional work that benefits children or children?s causes in the state. The recipients were chosen from among applications submitted from across the state.

Rapid City and Northern Hills? residents named to the 2009 Champion for Children Honor Roll include:


  • Pat Jessen, Rapid City, director Westside Preschool and Daycare;
  • Bernie Peterson, Rapid City, program director, Youth & Family Services Rural Head Start;
  • Action for the Betterment of the Community, Sturgis, which encourages youngsters to adopt a safe and drug-free lifestyle; and
  • TDG Communications, Deadwood, for promoting the importance of affordable, high quality early education and child care.
